Owners manual for a Swift Challenger 540

Postby scarlets » January 8th, 2008, 11:36 pm

I have recently bought my first second hand caravan, it was advertised a a Swift challanger 540, it has unfortunatly come with out a owners manual. Swift have said that they would send me one in the post if i can give them the ser4ial number of the A frame or the windo. I have looked and supplied them with all the numbers that i could find but they do not have any of them on computer that match. I was hoping that i would be able to download some being as you can normally get any thing on the net. I believe that the caravan is in its 19's but that is all i know about the age.

Can any one help as my family and i have been looking forward to using it this summer but i really would feel better if i knew how things worked with it. :(

To determine what handbook you need it’s essential to find out the model year of your van. Let's see if we can succeed where Swift has failed. Assuming it’s not pre-1992 you should find a 17 character code in the corner of each window. This code gives information on:

• The Manufacturer & Country of origin
• Single or Twin axle
• Model year
• Build number

Here’s an example: SGDS095SWS0012345
SG means UK, D - Swift, S - single axle, 095 - 1995 model year*, SW - Swift, S - 1995 model year, 0012345 - build no.

Here the model year is shown twice. *The first instance is not used by all manufacturers and so should not be relied upon - these characters may signify somethimg else. The second instance is the important one and is decoded as follows:

N = 1992, 1 = 2001
P = 1993, 2 = 2002
R = 1994, 3 = 2003
S = 1995, 4 = 2004
T = 1996, 5 = 2005
V = 1997, 6 = 2006
W = 1998, 7 = 2007
X = 1999, 8 = 2008
Y = 2000

Here's a couple more examples - SGDT001SW10123456 - this is a Swift twin axle caravan, 2001 model year.
- SGBSC05BYY0123456 - this is a Bailey single axle caravan, 2000 model year.

Check out the code on your windows and let us know the model year of your van.

That sounds like far more help than I got from swift. Last time i looked on all of the windows the only thing I could find was the name ROXITE 80, the caravan is not left on my drive so I will have another look tomorrow.

Many thanks for all you help it is really appreciated

Hi, I too recently bought my first caravan, a Swift Rapide 440/4 1991 model. Luckily this came with all the original documentation. If it helps, the manual for the Swift caravans for that year was a single publication covering all models, including the challenger. I've checked it but there are no identifying publication marks unfortunately, only the publication date which was 1990. If your van is pre '92, then it probably won't have been Cris registered and therefore won't have etched window numbers. On my '91 Rapide, the chassis number is on a plate attached to the A frame on the offside. You view it through a oblong aperture in the A frame cover. The format appears to be YYSWNNNNNN i.e YY = 91 for 1991, SW (for Swift presumably) followed by NNNNNN a 6 digit serial number. Regards Paul.

Sounds like you've been looking at the small label inserted by manufacturer Polyplastic inside the window, usually in the top right hand corner. The term 'Roxite' is the the name of the cast acrylic produced by Polyplastic. The two digit coding afterwards specifies the acrylic colour:-
Roxite 60 - Green
Roxite 64 - Green Opaque
Roxite 80 - Brown
Roxite 84 - Brown Opaque
Roxite 90 - Grey
Roxite 94 - Grey Opaque / smokey grey (after 1990)

To identify the model year of your caravan the number you need should be etched into the plastic as a series of dots, normally near the bottom of each window. If there is no sign of anything like this then your caravan could just be pre-1992 (or had all its windows changed). Having said that I don't think Swift made a 540 model pre-1992. Whatever, there should still be a number stamped on the 'A' frame. If you can't decode it with my information then the information provided above by misterc could be very helpful.
