Challenger 540 Bed Mattress Too Hard

Postby JoeC » January 11th, 2008, 4:08 pm

Had my new Challenger 540 since May 07 and find the fixed bed mattress very hard and after only 3-4 days on it I start to get back ache and have problems sleeping at night. I have tried a mattress topper on it but did not make any difference. However, it was not a 'sponge' type one so was wondering if one of these would make a difference. Any thoughts welcome.

I have spoken to my supplying dealer who said there is nothing that can be done by them and that this is not covered under warrenty.

Hi Joe,

We had similar experiences with ours. The solution was a double self inflating mattress from GoOutdoors in Sheffield. It fits the rear bed of our 490 exactly and provides a really comfy bed. Haven't been able to roll it up back to how it came but it fits under the seat just right how I do it, and we leave it in the porch awning during the day.

See http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/sleeping/5709388004161 for details.

Hope this helps

Hi
We took delivery of our Conqueror 630 just before Christmas. Upgraded from a 2005 Conqueror 650. This is the first van that we've had with a fixed bed. We spent 4 nights in the van over New Year, and found the sprung mattress very comfortable. Granted it is firm, but personally we found it much more comfortable than sleeping on the 'made up' bed that we had in the 650.

Mike I have just bought a 92 Challenger 490se so I may well buy the self inflating airbed as I find the bed a bit hard to, is the 490 easy to tow? my last caravn was only 15ft all in and will this one being 21 and a half feet is quite a bit of difference!.

Well I tow it with a Discovery so I have more than the upper hand when it comes to weight ratios. Consequently it is very easy to tow plus I like to be able to see through the van whilst towing to see what is behind etc. You should find it easier to tow than the 15ft van because the axle will be slightly further back which will also make reversing a bit easier as well - just remember there are a few feet extra when turning it.

Thanks for that Mike, I tow with a P reg Frontera 2.5 TD so weight wise it should be able to tow it without a prob, I am seriously thinking about going on one of those courses the caravan clubs run to give me extra confidence, I have to tow because the OH has MS and can't drive anymore, if things were different I would definitely leave the towing to him
