GRP Front Panel Repair

Postby Nicholas » April 6th, 2009, 5:06 pm

I've detected a hairline crack on the front GRP panel of my Swift Celeste near the window. The van is a 2004 model

Thought of just touching up with paint stick but really want something that will cover and seal the area. No sign of water ingress but want to sort asap to preserve value and before the caravan season gets into full swing.

Be grateful for any suggestions.

I have never carried out repairs to front panels
I would think the front panel on your year of van would be ABS
ABS smooth on the inside and out side
Friber glass smooth out rough inner

Motor body shops that weld repair car bumper may be of some help

The panel is indeed GRP (fibreglass) as you say Nicholas. What you are seeing is a gel coat crack. This is where the gel used to line the mould before the fibreglass is applied has cracked. Such cracks are quite common, especially on curved areas, but are cosmetic rather than structural.

In bad cases a repair can be effected using a suitable gel coat repair kit but most of the time the cracks are hairline and do not warrant such treatment. You could try one of the coloured car polishes designed to fill small cracks.

I have a rather bad set of cracks in the corner of my 1999 sterling eccles.

I would like to cover the two corners with a decal or sticker but am afraid that they will not weather well.
mine is not letting in water either so is just to help the look of things.

what i want to know, is it recommended to paint the whole front as it is not as glossy as new and is hard to keep clean or should i go with stickers.

how much would i expect to pay for a full frontal paint job

any help good
