Swanwick New Year Rally,  Derbyshire

28th Dec 2006 – 1st Jan 2007

We returned to this popular venue for our New Year rally wondering whether we would have another snowy New Year there but unfortunately it was just wet and windy. 40 ‘vans made their way to Swanwick to see in the New Year the SOC way.

On Thursday evening we had our tea and coffee and got reacquainted with friends, finding out what people had been up to over the Xmas period.
Friday night we were treated to hot beef and pork batches laid on by Mark and Ann Neale, Neil and Ann Stanley and David and Linda Hill who were celebrating their 50th, 250th and 400th rallies respectively. We also had to ‘endure’ ( I think that’s the correct word) a 100 question quiz by Keith and it was the longest quiz in SOC history as it lasted nearly 2¼ hours. Surprisingly it was won by the Bevans.

Saturday was a free day to visit the local attractions we have visited this venue 6 times now and have never made it to the local railway museum so off we went and found that Thomas the Tank Engine was there, and we have 2 children who love Thomas so off we went and spent an hour with Thomas and the fat controller. Saturday evening we were treated to a buffet provided by the ralliers and the live entertainment was provided by a fantastic singer who did bear a passing resemblance to one of our members. People were asking for more and I think she did sing for a bit longer than intended. The presentations were also performed for those celebrating anniversary rallies.

Sunday morning we were treated to bacon and sausage batches and tea and coffee to set us up for our shopping sessions or maybe the drinking session for the New Year’s Eve party. On returning to the hall for the evening the hall was transformed and looked very smart in lilac, cream and silver. Also the buffet laid on by the Marshals was excellent and had taken a lot of hard work to prepare for us all. A couple of Children’s games followed the eating and then the party started. At 11.50 we were given Champagne to see in 2007 in style. At midnight the balloons fell and party poppers popped. Auld Lang Syne was sang and then followed kissing your fellow friends to wish them all the best for the coming year. The partying went on and DJ Bonkers made it to bed at 2.45 am.

New Years Day flag was held and it was very quiet and subdued maybe some people had undertaken a bit too much party spirit the night before. John Brailsford rewarded the Marshals with their bit of plastic and a gift from the ralliers.

Thanks again to David, Linda, Merv, Sue, Keith and Diane and also Cheryl and Marie for all their hard work in running this rally.
