Works Rally

Driffield Showground, North Yorkshire

1-5th September

It had been four years since our last works rally so this one attracted a lot of interest with some members travelling 200 or more miles to be there. We also shared the occasion with two of our sister clubs - the Eccles Owners Club and the Bessacarr Owners Club. It made for an eclectic mix if people but everyone got on like a house on fire with many old acquaintances being renewed. Each night was party night courtesy the large on site hall sponsored by Swift.

At this point we should mention Swift’s Liaison Officer, Kelvin Brown. He was the one who booked the site, obtained permission for the use of the halls and ensured that we were compliant with the fire regulations at all times. The fact that we had rallied there once or twice before without incident undoubtedly helped but no-one should under estimate the amount of work put in by Kelvin to ensure the arrangements went like clockwork.

The high point of the rally was undoubtedly the factory visit on the Saturday morning. We were split into groups of around a dozen each and give our own guide. Our group was slightly larger so we ended up with two guides – great for asking questions. I think it’s fair to say that we were all bowled over by the sheer scale of all the buildings and the level of automation in the machinery. Everywhere was tidy and spotless and it was obvious that our guides took great pride in showing us the site. A big thank you to Swift and to those staff who gave up their Saturday morning to facilitate our visit.

The weekend coincided with the nearby Lawns Caravan Show so most people headed there after visiting the factory. The new Challenger Sport attracted great interest with at least one member saying they would be ordering one.

Finally a thank you to the rally marshals, Clive & Gill Bevan and Dave & Mary Potter,  for putting up with us all and making sure we had a fabulous time.
