Another Lap at Castle Combe

Castle Combe Circuit

Chippenham, Wiltshire

24-28th May 2013

On a very blustery day over 40 units arrived at this popular venue for another action packed Bank Holiday Weekend.   The welcome was, as always, warm from these hard working Marshals and we all appreciated the efforts they and their helpers had had put in to erect the marquee where we could enjoy our teas and coffees, evening get togethers and flag pole.

Saturday dawned bright and sunny, the morning was the highlight of our weekend with 17 members testing their skill on the Kart Track, well supported by a good number of Swift Spectators.   Everyone enjoyed the 'practice session' and then as the visors were lowered racing began in earnest, the little green monsters took over and it was every man (and three ladies) for themselves.

Competition was fierce in the heats, as each entrant competed against everyone else, before the excitement of the semi finals and the final.  Everyone went inside for presentation of the trophies (it was just like being at the Monaco Grand Prix but without the champagne!) and Podium places went to Mick George in first place,  followed by Andy Timothy and Stuart White   Also that day we had the benefit of the Lotus Owners 'Track Day' taking place allowing us not only to see the cars but to watch and marvel (and dream) as the owners enjoyed their fast laps.

After a busy day we were able to appreciate the lovely weather and enjoy the opportunity of joining in the communal barbeque and then all meet up in the marquee for the evening get together when David taxed our brains to the limit as we tried to identify the music he had prepared.

Sunday was again a beautiful day. We couldn't really believe our luck, a Bank Holiday Weekend  and everyone being able to sit out and enjoy the sun (and in some cases get well burned into the bargain!)  We all became Racehorse Owners and Spectators in the afternoon and although no one finished up as a millionaire we had all spent  a fun afternoon and in so doing had been able to make a contribution towards the cost of the childrens Christmas Party and to the Swift Charity. The fantastic cakes served were delicious and greatly appreciated as we sat with our cups of tea (and other liquids!) in the sunshine.

Outdoor eating was again the order for many of us for our evening meal and later that evening we had the opportunity to meet up again in the Marquee and have our common sense tested, this time by Chris, in a short quiz. Some of us didn't seem to have much and there were remarks of "oh yes, of course" as the answers were read out.

Flagpole followed and winners cups kindly donated by Graham and Linda Barton were presented to Mick George as the outright winner of the Karting and to Paula Mann as the fastest lady???

Monday was the Circuit Race Day and although blustery there was still no rain!!! and we were able to sit in our chairs above the track and watch the practice and the racing.  Sadly some members had to leave us that evening whilst those remaining had the opportunity to meet up again in the marquee for the evening get together when our brains and musical knowledge were again put to the test when David tested our knowledge of TV themes.   He must watch a lot of telly!

Tuesday saw the departure of many of us, whilst the lucky few were able to remain  for longer and in some cases prepare to move on to the Exbury Rally. What a brilliant weekend we all had and our thanks must go to David, Barbara, Chris and Mike for all their hard work in organising and running this very busy rally and also to the various people whose help they had enlisted in any way to make the weekend run so smoothly. We are sure we speak for many when we say "Here's to our next visit to Castle Combe"
