Collingham Cricket Club - Chinese New Year

Feb 2006

In the dark depths of old Newark at the local cricket club called Collingham there were some strange goings on. The Chinese had invaded the SOC. On Friday evening it seemed like a normal Friday tea and coffee with some of the marshals getting slightly inebriated on Chilly Chilli Vodka provided by the local Committee member.

On Saturday young children were busily colouring Dragons while the older children and Teenagers were making lanterns. On arrival in the pavilion we were greeted by the sights of Whun Ung Lo, Lotus Blossom, Winky Wonky and Wishie Washy (although they looked remarkably like some SOC members). We had also been transported back to old China with Dragons hanging from the ceilings, Chinese poems and some beautiful hand crafted lanterns. The scent of Incense and Joss sticks filled the air. Tables were decorated with Orchids, Chinese flags, Dogs and Chopsticks. 2 Chinese children arrived with another little boy resembling the Chinese Dog and a few grown up Chinese people arrived. The local takeaway arrived with our Pukka pies (I don’t know if that’s Chinese or not) Not many people attempted to eat their food with their chopsticks though!. The highlight of the evening, if you can call it that, was Winky Wonky’s ‘Chinese quiz’ although he struggled to get 40 questions so a lot were songs or bands with the word China or Chinese in
.
Sunday morning we were back to normal (!) David had done some of his baking and were treated to home made cakes and flapjacks to accompany our morning brews. So thank you to David, Linda, Keith and Di for a great weekend.
