Gaslow refillable gas system for a car or motorhome

Thanks to Martin Roberts for sending in this account of how he has converted his last two caravans to use the Gaslow refillable system. This system can be filled with autogas at a suitable filling station.

It must be over 4 years since I decided to go over to fixed Gaslow refillable canisters and I have never regretted it.

When we started I installed one Gaslow tank and filler and high pressure hose and retained one plastic refillable gas tank, could have been an ordinary gas tank, with an auto changeover valve with the Gaslow as the first tank and the other as the backup, this worked very well and ultimately I put in a second Gaslow tank but it might suit other people just to have one.

No more worries about phoning up for more gas and lugging the heavy canisters about or taking an extra tank as you have one that is almost empty. I fitted the system myself and used an 11 kg and a 6 kg and fitted an automatic change over valve. We use the 11 kg first which automatically changes over to the 6 kg as reserve/fall back .

I then fitted the system into my new van. At Newbury New Year rally it was very cold at night and we did use a lot more gas. One member paid more for a 6kg canister that I paid for my 11kg and 6kg which I filled up at the local service station. I paid about £12.50 for both.

We fill up either on our way to a rally or on the way home. We look out for petrol stations where it is easy access for a long out fit. At a big Sainsbury's I once filled up with LPG, diesel for the car and petrol for the generator.

The Alde central heating system is very good once you get used to setting it to suite your own requirements but it does take more gas. We run at 22 day side and 15 night side. Our cats think it is wonderful they lay over the hot air vent on the fixed bed and put their heads up behind the curtains.
